“First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, and they fight you and then you win.” Don’t be surprised if this line rings a tiny bell. It’s a favorite quote among activists from Ghandi or labor leader Nicholas Klein. Now, read again and you will find it’s also awfully familiar and applicable if you’re trying to enter the blogosphere, start your own business or sell a new product. Be honest, it feels the same way.

Consider also “the path of least resistance.” Wiki tells us, in a nutshell and simple terms, that it is the course of action that avoids conflicts or confrontations. Meaning – minimal barriers, easy passage, almost a nice-warm-embrace kind of feeling. It’s the first quote with the “win” only and minus the initial hurdles. Who doesn’t want this? Nobody. In fact, it’s what a hack is all about – the easier, more efficient and effective way to do things. In a way, every product or idea is and should be a hack.
Now let’s put the above paragraphs together. Basically, the second quote is what you’re offering your audience or customers and the first quote refers to what you have to go through for them. No wonder Steve Jobs is a hero. Think of this for a minute or two.
The path of most resistance – you just have to walk it (yes, Neo). Fear not! It’s not as hard as you think and it has been done for ages. Patience and courage are must-have virtues especially for those venturing into start-ups of any kind.

Ignorance is bliss
Most of us think this is the biggest hurdle of all – ignorance of a product or lack of interest in it. And this is not just a response from consumers but also from industry insiders. So nobody has heard of your mobile app? It means two things, either it’s an idea so brand new it doesn’t strike a chord or it has been done before and they don’t think you can still reinvent it. The lack of interest is mostly because they’re happy with what they already have or they have given up trying to find a solution for a need no product has met. Overall, it’s a perfect opportunity for building a product; it’s a fertile ground for planting a seed of your idea on.

Look who’s laughing now
How many success stories have you read that started with a few companies or executives turning their big thumbs down a good idea? How many industry giants have been called “least likely to succeed”? A few great men had this label in high school or college (if they did graduate).
Consider the other side of “a sense of humor is just common sense, dancing” (William James). We’ve been told some revolutionary ideas are really just common sense; some people laugh wondering why they didn’t think about it or they couldn’t get how it would work. Others don’t really know an idea would hit them until they try it on for size. You wouldn’t be surprised to find that not a few adults initially dismissed Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds as very silly games and ended up spending more gaming hours trying to hit those noisy pigs and throw veggies at zombies.

It’s open season, baby
This is really the hardest part. The first two stages are just…well, compared to “fighting” with reviewers, and competitors – challenging. It’s now the point of no return because you’re mobile app is already out there, exposed. The good news is that when you get to this point the industry and the target market have somehow noticed your product already. Surely, you can comfort yourself with “reviews are made by fools like them but only I can make this (mobile) gem”. “You cannot please everybody” will come handy, too. But the best strategy of all is foresight which is to prepare for this stage already when you’re coding. Any fancy application can be upstaged by a working, user-friendly, and robust software.

Winning the game
There’s not much we can talk about winning except that it’s going feel really good. If it’s going to put some $$$ in your deep pockets, then that’s a bonus. Nothing wrong about coding for cash but do remember that passion pays off (ah, this line deserves its own post!).

Really, the point of this post is a cliché – no guts, no glory. But damn it, it is true.

(Image: Getty Images)

No Way But Up for the Mobile Apps Industry
(Fearless Forecasts, Soaring Revenues)

With around seven billion homo sapiens in the planet, can you imagine a one-to-one ratio between our species and mobile devices? In Cisco’s Global Mobile Data Traffic Update for 2012 to 2017, however, it is predicted that will be more mobile devices than humans on earth by the end of 2013. Whatever this means to the IT industry, the IDC forecast is also noteworthy: mobile devices will have a 57 percent share in IT spending growth this year. This is not surprising because NPD Group disclosed that 37 percent of PC users are now using mobile devices for accessing web content. Now, if you think all of these users are flooding the browsers for web access, think again. Flurry reported that more time is spent on mobile software than on the web in the United States, even challenging media consumption via television.

With these astounding figures in mind, saying “build it and they will come” is not an exaggeration. Application developers as well as web designers who used to just add mobile accessibility to their products (as an afterthought) are now scrambling to ride on this unprecedented growth rate. Businesses that do not pay attention to these trends are at risk of losing the race for market share versus their competitors who have smartened up.

Obviously, businesses and the mobile app developers that serve them would like to ride on this rushing revenue stream. With so many rivals to compete with, is it even possible to enter the market at this time? Of course, yes, especially because mobile apps are basically ideas that have become real and practical. This may sound like a cliché but it is true and it has been proven by the so-called appreneurs who have made it big with game-changing ideas wrapped in attractive designs. Some of these ideas were so fresh or new that they arrived ahead of their time and actually created the needs or wants of consumers. Needless to say, everyone gets a chance to come up with the “greatest thing since sliced bread” in the mobile apps industry.

Forecasts cannot please or impress everyone but actual revenue data cannot be ignored. Flurry CEO Robert Khalaf, in a talk at the Flurry Source Conference last month, reminded that this industry “did not exist in 2008 but, in the last year, $18 billion in revenue was generated from mobile apps.” Khalaf observed that it took 16 years for the Internet to achieve what the mobile apps industry pulled off in just four years. Now consider this in the light of the forecasts made by Cisco above. Is it possible for any business or developer to see its own revenues soar in the next years to come?

What is also interesting about mobile apps is its compatibility with user-paid as well as passive revenue models. Because of the high level of engagement it provides with consumers, mobile software can be used for revenue generation via advertising. A great number of companies have already embraced mobile devices as a new platform to reach their target market. In fact, Strategy Analytics predicts that the revenue growth over $35B in 2017 for mobile apps will be driven by ad spending. With this business model, the developer and other stakeholders can simply focus on finding or being found by the best advertiser.

Overall, mobile apps trends have changed and will continue to profoundly change the way most companies do their business starting with making the decision to sink or ride the stream.

Another year, another hope, another opportunity. Every year is a new start, so how could you make the most out of it? (Besides trying the latest fad diet but FAILING, gaining tons of pounds at the end of the year. Oh blame the holiday food.)

But you know the great thing about the new year is that you get to start again with a fresh perspective – full of hope and positivity. Everyone has a shock full of motivation during the first few months of the year, so why not take advantage of it? Create a ‘New Year’s Resolution List’ and stick with it (THROUGHOUT the year, alright.)

You can try writing down good memories, as well as lessons you’ve learned from the previous year and then start from there. Below, I’ve listed down 7 Lucky Resolutions to help you succeed (more) in 2013.

7 Lucky Resolutions for Sure Success in 2013:

1 – Health/fitness. You can still write down ‘Diet’ in your resolutions list, but make sure it’s a realistic one. Choose a diet/fitness program that you can maintain for the rest of your life. Living an overall healthy lifestyle will not only improve your body, it will also enhance your mind and entire life. Just imagine, where else could you go if you’re such a weakling? Now imagine all the places you could go and all the things you could do if you’re as strong as Superman

2 – Self Growth. Creating New Year’s resolutions is really all about improving yourself so you can also improve your life. If you’re immature, then simply grow-up! (Kidding.) The easiest way to improve your life is to change your perspective or state of mind. Become a completely new person with goals and values. Dream big and you will go places. (It doesn’t matter what your age is.) Take courage, believe, don’t give up, have a positive mental attitude – and you’ll overcome all sorts of obstacles that Life will hurl at you.

3 – Investment in oneself. This year why not try something new? Maybe you should take up a new hobby that you can also turn into profit? Or just for making your life more meaningful and happy? You can go back to college, join clubs, or take lessons at the local community center. Whatever you do, relate it to your personal success and happiness. That will be the best investment you could ever gift yourself.

4 – Relationship. All types of riches, if spent alone, are useless. It will NOT make you happy. Do yourself a favor – enjoy your life more with the people you love, or love more people. Gain new friends and improve your relationship with your parents, children, spouse or partner. Remember, people are more important than money. And no, YOU are not more important than anybody else. (Banner: NO to Narcissism.)

5 – Emotion. How often do you deal with set-backs? How do you usually feel during heated arguments? Do you easily give up, get depressed, or get angry? If your answer is YES, then it’s about time you develop your EQ or Emotional Intelligence. Believe me – it will make your life a lot easier and more satisfying.

6 – Reputation. So you’re the type of person who doesn’t care what other people say. OOPS, you SHOULD care what others say especially if what they’re saying is TRUE. Nobody wants to be known as “A Terror” or “Liar” so don’t be one. Otherwise, nobody will truly like you, respect you, or trust you – NOBODY – even the people who can help you succeed in your life or career. Remember, there are always practical reasons for maintaining a good reputation.

7 – Being Grateful. Now this last lucky step or strategy to your success and happiness this year is one of the most important ones. Why? Because no matter what you achieve in life, big or small, if you’re not grateful and contented, then you will never be happy. Appreciate the smallest things, be thankful, and you will multiply your happiness tenfold. Yes, even if it’s just an Aston Martin (or a penny you happen to pick up by the side of the road

This is one of my favorite short stories EVER. I hope it can impact how you view your life. Enjoy:

“An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, “only a little while.”

The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The American then asked, “but what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life.”

The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “15-20 years.”

“But what then?”

The American laughed and said that’s the best part. “When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”

“Millions.. Then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

So many people are so busy trying to keep “climbing the corporate ladder” only to find that they missed what matters most in their lives. I read this quote once by Robert Frost: “By working faithfully eight hours a day, you may eventually get to be a boss and work 12 hours a day.” If you can’t enjoy the money you make, then what’s the point?

So, Let’s discuss some of the most important rules in Traveling in a foreign country. It doesn’t matter if you are traveling for business or pleasure, It is absolutely critical that you keep safety your number one priority. Now, bad things can happen almost anywhere, but being in a foreign country can cause more problems than you may think.

In no particular order, Let’s begin:

photo: Erwin Felicilda

1. Do Not overdress. Wearing all Prada accessories makes you look like a bulls eye for what I call opportunistic thieves. Dress more casual but still nice.

2. Do Not leave you’re your hostel or hotel without grabbing one of their business card. You might be surprise how many times people get too drunk when there out partying and get left behind by their fellow friends. Next thing they know, they are walking aimlessly in the middle of the road trying to communicate with random strangers for help (it doesn’t help if you don’t know the native language by the way).

3. Do Not over pack. Travel as light as you can. You can always purchase the items that you can’t leave without when you get to your destination. It’s not that fun hauling 50 pounds of luggage everywhere.

4. Do Not bring a fanny pack everywhere. There are so many reasons why you shouldn’t that it’s not even funny. Well it is and most of the time the funny remarks is intended to whoever is wearing one. It screams tourist, which is also say TARGET! Target from thieves and bystanders making fun of how ridiculous you look. Invest in either a shoulder wallet to put your important belongings where you can easily hide it under your shirt or jacket.

5. Do Not get arrested! I REPEATE…DO NOT GET ARRESTED. You might think pulling a dine and dash or jumping over subway barriers is all for fun but think again my foreign friend, you are not invincible. If you are arrested for breaking a law in a foreign country, don’t expect a lot of sympathy from the law enforcements. If you think your friendly neighborhood embassy is there to help, think again. There will not be any help available to you if the fault is yours! Bottom line. Obey the rules! Don’t be stupid.

6. Do Not stay longer than your visa permits. Again, this relates to what I just mentioned before. Unless you are curious to see the inside of a foreign country’s prison cell. The penalty for overstaying your visas varies in different places. Some places actually detain you. It’s definitely not worth it! Get out when your suppose to and your remember your friendly neighborhood embassy can’t help you in this kind of situation.

7. Do Not lose your receipts. This is probably one of the fastest ways to lose money, especially in China. You must hold on that receipt like your life depended on it! Hotels in China for example will not return your hefty deposit unless you have that magical piece of paper that they gave you the first night you checked in the hotel.

8. Do Not change your cash at a cash exchange or bank in a foreign country. You should go to your bank to make sure your card will work in the country you are planning to visit. Now everyone says cash is power. Well, not if it’s not the right currency! ATM card is the only way to go! Bank cards get the best exchange rates. If you go to banks and cash exchanges, they will charge you an arm and a leg with commission fees.

9. Do Not expect everyone to speak English! Yes, like you, I feel fortunate to speak English and even more so that so many people around the world speak the language to but don’t expect that everyone you meet in a foreign country speak it or understand you. Take the time to learn a few words or phrases of the language of the country you are planning to visit.

10. Do Not ride a Taxi. This is especially a big NO if you are traveling with more than 5 people. In Spain, you can only ride 4 passengers in a cab. Unless you can find one of those rare mini vans taxi then your other friends are out of luck. If you want to save money, avoid these wallet-draining transportation as much as possible take their public railway system if they have it or public transportation. They are clearly marked and very easy to understand if you take your time if you familiarize yourself with whatever system they have in that city.

Obviously, there are several other DO NOTS while traveling but I figured these ten list can help you get started. Remember, have fun and experience new things while you are out and about in your travels but always keep some of these points in mind.

Let’s face it, we all had people around in our lives that have said “I would love to start my own business” but sadly most of them never really follow through or have given up with the idea. If you ever want to start your own business, you absolutely need to have one thing in place: THE RIGHT MINDSET! Having the expertise and the know-how of whatever your niche might be is not enough for you to be successful in business or whatever else you pursue for that matter!

There are different ways for you to develop the right mindset. It can be your determination or your focus on the big picture. It might be your work ethics or your motivation to succeed. All these key attributes are right in different respect. But the one key attribute that surpasses all these is: YOUR TRUE PASSION.

What is your passion? Better yet, what does passion means to you?

The word passion is defined as:

“The state of the mind when it is powerfully acted upon and influenced by something external to itself, the state of any particular faculty which, under such conditions, becomes extremely sensitive or uncontrollably excited, any emotion or sentiment (specifically, love or anger) in a state of abnormal or controlling activity; an extreme or inordinate desire; also, the capacity or susceptibility of being so affected; as, to be in a passion; the passions of love, hate, jealously, wrath, ambition, avarice, fear, etc”

With that said, being able to center your true passion with your true goal in life is your key in setting the right mindset for yourself. Whenever you love what you do for a living, you will never let anything take that focus away. You will keep moving forward and keep fighting for it until eventually accomplishing your goal. Combining both your passion and your goal is the most powerful combination to achieve anything you put your mind into.

My true passion is helping people. I am a serial entrepreneur to the core. Being able to work for myself and making a positive impact in peoples’ lives is what pushes me every single day to keep doing what I do. The work I put in everyday to whatever projects, regardless how small or grand it may be are all done with my full capacity. I don’t consider it work because I enjoy what I do.

Let’s look at all the successful entrepreneurs in our age: Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, or Donald Trump. They have enough money to live their lives at least 5 fold! Why are they still working? Is it because of money? Money is a factor to some of these successful people but it’s not their passion. I’m sure they don’t mind having it buts not the reason why they keep going to work every day. They go to work because they are passionate about what they do.

If you haven’t done so already, I want you to sit down and write down what you think your true passion might be. To help you out, think of your talents or hobbies. Do you enjoy any of them? How about your childhood dreams? What did you want to be? What do you daydream about? When you’re done writing all these down, say to yourself “would I do any of this if I don’t get paid a single cent!” And if you can say yes to at least one of them then you’re on the right path.

This might take time for some but always keep this exercise in mind whenever you feel lost. Watch a movie or read a book. Something in those sources might spark something inside you. Find your passion first, and then get your mindset right. Remember, if it’s not something you enjoy doing then you will never achieve the success you’ve always wanted.

You are the only one who can create your reality. True passion intertwines with success. Follow through with that in mind and you will be rewarded at the end.
